FIXED WING PRIVATE PILOTS
A
Private Pilot License (PPL) is a qualification that
permits the holder to act as the pilot of an aircraft
privately, i.e. not for remuneration. The basic requirements
to obtain the license and the privileges it confers
are agreed internationally by the International Civil
Aviation Organization (ICAO).
ICAO, an agency of the United Nations, codifies the
principles and techniques of international air navigation;
however the actual implementation varies quite widely
from country to country. The South African Civil Aviation
Authority is the body that regulates all types of aviation
locally.
What is needed to obtain a PPL?
The applicant must be over the age of 17.
A minimum of 40 hours of flight training, of which 15
hours
will be solo
To pass a medical exam through an approved physician.
Ground courses on meteorology, air law, principles of
flight,
navigation, and engines and airframes.
Pass a flight test consisting of general handling and
a navigation test
Have completed a restricted radio course
A person can learn to fly in just three weeks or pace
it out over a year or
more.
